Welcome to GIS-studio.nl. This website gives information on the GIS-studio of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of the University of Amsterdam and the education and research it facilitates. Please use the menu on the left to navigate through this website.

The GIS-studio
The GIS-studio was established in 2003 to serve students and staff of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of the University of Amsterdam and to assist them in their spatial data analyis using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) software.

Hardware and software
The GIS-studio facilitates 18 high-end computers (64-bit quad-core processors, dual widescreen monitor setup, 16GB RAM, Windows 10, see picture to the right), 5 Trimble Yuma7 rugged tablets (picture below) and up-to-date GIS-, OBIA- and remote sensing software, such as ArcGIS Desktop 10.x, ArcGIS Pro 3.x and eCogntion Developer 10.

Education
The GIS-studio has developed courses that consist of individual self-tuition modules. These modules cover selected topics in GIS and remote sensing with applications in earth sciences, biology and forensic sciences.

We also encourage people from other universities or institutes to participate in one of our courses. For more information how to enroll, please navigate to the Education section.

M.Sc. projects and Research
The GIS-studio facilities and assistance are also available for master students and staff to facilitate their research. Please visit the M.Sc. projects and Research sections for examples of finished projects and ongoing research.

Online Reservation Systems (ORS)
The computers can be booked in advance with our online reservation system. Please visit the ORS to make your reservations.

UvA Geoportal (will be replaced in 2023)
The UvA Geoportal facilitates the efficient exchange of geodata within the UvA community, especially the IBED and FMG institutes.
